Wireless multi-room music system maker Sonos has released its first Controller app for Android, available for free as a download. At the same time, the company released the latest iteration of its system software, Version 3.4, which allows users to access Apple AirPlay music sources in multiple rooms at the same time.
The Android app offers a few performance nuances that Sonos’s iPhone software does not provide, including the ability to search for content by voice command and the ability to use the button on the side of the phone to control the entire system’s volume.
“This introduction fits with our strategy of giving our customers the experience of being able to play and control everything that’s out there,” said Jon Reilly, technical product manager.
The Android app works with each Sonos S5 in every room and can either play the same content in every room or different content simultaneously in every room. Further, the usability of the Android device as a phone or texting instrument is not impeded by the Sonos app’s functions.
Sonos’s System Software 3.4, also available today, supports Apple AirPlay, and simplifies access of AirPlay-enabled music sources in multiple rooms, providing Party Mode functionality that is available only on Sonos. “We’re the first and so far only company with multi-room implementation of AirPlay,” said Reilly. The System Software update also lets the user plug an AirPort Express into any Sonos line-in device to get the multi-room experience.
These Sonos introductions come on the heels of a year where the company doubled its sales as well as its customer base, said Reilly. “We’re on a similar growth track for the future,” he added, citing a tripling of employees in the last three years, a move to a larger building, and a high customer satisfaction/recommendation score.
The company is also looking to expand its distribution base, said Reilly. It is well established in the custom installation channel, and the introduction of the ZonePlayer S5 grew its business in more mass channels. “We’re working on different advertising venues and on different ways to talk to music-lovers,” said Reilly.
